IGNITION SYSTEM. There are two different ignition systems used on the JT8D-200 series engines. Due to different cockpit ignition selector and start switches it becomes three different variations when installed on the aircraft.
1) System one consists of one 20 joule high energy system and a 4 joule low energy system. The 20 joule system provides power to both ignitors and is used for starting and for emergency conditions. The 4 joule system provides power only to the ignitor in the #4 combustion chamber and is used for normal flameout during takeoff, landing and severe weather.
1.A) In the first variation of system one, the ignition selector is a three position switch marked OVRD/OFF/GRD START & CONT. and the start switch is a two position switch marked ON/OFF. With the switch in the OFF position, the system is neither energized nor armed. The OVRD position provides 20 joule energy to both ignitors, bypassing the start switches and the fuel shutoff levers. This position is used to provide flameout protection during takeoff and landing in heavy rain, snow, standing water or slush. The GRD START & CONT position provides 20 joule energy to both ignitors for starting when the start switch is in the ON position and the fuel shutoff lever is ON. When the start switch is released to OFF and the fuel shutoff switch remains ON, the system switches to 4 joule energy to one ignitor.
1.B) In the second variation, the three position ignition selector switch is marked OVRD/OFF/CONTIN and the three position start switch is marked GRD/OFF/FLT. With the switch in the OFF position, the system is deenergized provided the start switch is also in the OFF position. The OVRD position provides 20 joule energy to both ignitors, bypassing the start switches and fuel shutoff levers. The CONTIN position provides 4 joule power to one ignitor. When the start switch is placed to either GRD or FLT, 20 joule energy is provided to both ignitors for starting provided the fuel shutoff switch is ON.
2) System two consists of
two independently 20 joule ignition system (A&B). They can be used
independently or simultaneously and are selected from the 5 position switch
in the cockpit. The ignition selector switch positions are SYS A/OFF/SYS
B/BOTH/OVRD. OVRD provides 20 joule energy to both ignitors, bypassing
the start switches and the fuel shutoff levers. With the switch in the
OFF position, the system is deenergized. SYS A provides energy from system
A to ignitor A, SYS B provides energy from system B to ignitor B and BOTH
provides energy to both ignitors. SYS A or SYS B are used for normal ground
starts and BOTH for air starts. OVRD is generally reserved for emergency
conditions such as low altitude flameout. It also provides protection against
flameout during Takeoff and landing in heavy rain, snow, standing water
or slush.
