LONDON GATWICK AIRPORT
SUMMER 1996 RUNWAY AVAILABILITY

To: All Gatwick Airline Operators

 1. Introduction

Gatwick Airport Ltd. is planning to carry out a number of developments on and around the Main Runway. These developments will increase the length available for aircraft departing on runway 26L and will also enhance runway capacity.

Following a review to identify the most effective way of undertaking the work and minimising its impact on operations, it has been decided that a major part will be undertaken during the period July to September 1996. At this time of year the weather conditions are likely to be the most favourable and the effect of the loss of ILS facilities will be minimal.

2. Outline Programme

From July 1 to September 30, the following will be carried out
· Relocation of 08R ILS Localiser aerial
· Construction of 158m. starter strip and Rapid Access Taxiway for 26L
· Resurfacing of Main Runway Touchdown Zones
· Construction of new 08R Rapid Access Taxiway between Delta and Echo

The Main Runway 26L/08R will have reduced ILS availability. as follows:
26L - CAT I
08R - Visual

Between 2300-0600 Local Time every night of the week apart from Sundays, the Main Runway will be closed and the Northern Runway 26R/08L in use.

The whole project is due for completion in the Spring of 1997, but from September onwards the works will not have any impact on the Main Runway.
